HOFBAUER, János
(1803, Győr - after 1846 ?)

He studied in the polytechnic of Vienna, and then from 1822 at the landscape department of the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna. He settled in Pest-Buda around 1827. From this year onward he contributed to the portrait series of Ádám Ehrenreich - an etcher and publisher present both in Vienna and Pest who ran an art dealer's shop in Pest, too - entitled 'Icones principium'. His most widely known drawing depicted the view of Pest-Buda from the Rákos field. He taught in the School of Drawing in Győr from 1830 onwards. Some sources claim he died in Buda in 1939, while others say he continued his activities in Pest between 1839 and 1846, then moved to Vienna, where his was completely lost.
