HATVANY, Ferenc
(1881, Budapest - 1958, Lausanne)

Painter and art collector. His masters included Adolf Fényes in Budapest, Sándor Bihari in Nagybánya and J.P. Laurens at the Julian Academy in Paris. His nudes reflecting the influence of Ingres, a classicist artist, were first exhibited in 1899. His pictures had a touch of plasticity and objectivity. Character portrayal was more definite in his pictures in stronger colours ("Woman with Blue Hat").

After 1935 his painting became less formal as a result of post-impressionism. He spent years in Italy, Germany and Spain and had several exhibitions abroad (e.g. in Berlin and Paris in 1912). He was a remarkable art collector. Unfortunately, his collection of French and Hungarian masterpieces was lost in World War II. From 1947 onwards he lived in Paris.
