GYÖRGYI (Giergl), Alajos
(1821, Pest - 1863, Pest)

Painter. First he learnt to be a goldsmith in the workshop of his father, then he was taught by József Peschky to paint. He went on with his studies of painting in Vienna in 1841-43. After his return to Hungary, he received a lot of orders to paint portraits (Ferenc Deák, István Széchenyi and families of aristocrats), but he painted genre-pictures in biedermeier style ("Grieving Girl", "Poachers", "An Approaching Storm", "A Hard-Working Student", etc.). He tried his hand at the historic genre ("Zsigmond Báthory") and painting altars. His pictures after his trip to Italy reflected the impact of Venetian painting. He used the name "Giergl" until 1860 to sign his pictures with.
