FERENCZY, Béni
(1890, Szentendre - 1967, Budapest)

El Greco (obverse and reverse)

1941
Bronze medal, diameter: 11,7 cm
Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest

The "Greco" medal dating from 1941 is one of the most beautiful works in Ferenczy's rich oeuvre. The reverse shows a detail from Greco's painting. "Funeral of Count Orgaz" translated into sculptural terms. It would be hard to prove with word if it were not evident from the medal itself that the dramatic impact of the painting, based on a contrast of colours and tones, and the taut elongation of the monumental painting have been retained even though it is crammed into a small circular medal. There is perfect harmony in the arrangement of the three figures. The purifying nature of death expressed in the bold design and certain elements of the representation contrast strangely with the crowded decoration on the garment - a reference to the Baroque abundance of Greco's art.
