Fényes's last known pictures are documents of a tragic and sincere self-examination. In his unfinished picture, Old painter in Winter Landscape, there are no fairy-tale motifs or staffage figures; under a cold, low horizon like a monument of accusation, the painter stands, leaning on an umbrella, a hat on his head, sketchbook in hand as he surveys the village from a distance. The painter looks upon a world that has become alien to him; he does not long to be back in it, but simply vanishes from it without a last good-bye.
