Children's Game

1910
Oil on cardboard, 50 x 72,5 cm
Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest

"Children's Game" was created during the same period when "Poppy-seed Cake" was; in regards of their sociological meaning and colours the two canvases are closely related. However, there is an important difference: while the symmetry in the composition of "Poppy-seed Cake" is so obvious, in this case it remain "hidden". The seemingly spontaneously organized ball, baby furniture, small jug and plate in reality are arranged along the diagonal axis of the wooden horse. The awkward visual point and the seemingly arbitrary framing of the picture contribute to the illusion of spontaneousness, whereas everything in the composition is very consciously speculated; the visual point is at the exact height of a child's head, and every other awkwardness follows from this choice.
