On the Beach under Purple Sky

1934
Tempera on wood, 60 x 80 cm
Deák Collection, Municipal Gallery, Székesfehérvár

After a longer stay in Paris from 1932 and following his father's death, István Farkas lived in Budapest again. He painted pictures with lonely figures in landscape. Separation characterizes "On the Beach Under Purple Sky" best. Under the threatening brownish purple sky there are two figures with their backs to the speactator: they are watching the azure sea. A white fence and garden furniture are the only lighter patches in the picture. The couple sitting to the side of the picture are only minor characters whose only task is to emphasize the silent drama of the man and the woman.
