FADRUSZ, János
(1858, Pozsony - 1903, Budapest)

Crucifix

1892
Bronze, 240 x 160 cm
Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest

Fadrusz executed the Crucifix at the end of his studies at the Acadamy of Vienna. It was very well received and later it won a Grand Prix in Budapest. When working on the sculpture, Fadrusz made himself tied up to a cross and the photos taken were used as model for the Crucifix.

The original plaster version of the sculpture was donated by the artist to his native city, Pozsony. Several bronze copies were made and both the Hungarian National Gallery in Budapest and the Móra Ferenc Museum in Szeged have on in their collection. A bronze copy was also erected above the tomb of the artist at the Kerepesi Cemetery in Budapest.
