ENGEL, József
(1815, Sátoraljaújhely - 1901, Budapest)

Sculptor. He was the pupil of Schaller at the Vienna Academy from 1832 to 1838. He was awarded several prizes for "Juno" in 1836 and for "Apollo" in 1838. After visiting museums in Munich and Paris, he enrolled in the Academy of London. He modelled the bust of "Queen Victoria". The great success of "The Amazons' Fight with the Argonauta" allowed him a longer stay in Rome.

The subjects of his statues were mainly taken from the Greek mythology, but he produced busts, too ("Mrs. Kántor", "Kálmán Szerdahelyi", etc.). The statue of "Eve Awakening to Life" was awarded the Gold Medal at the World Exhibition in Vienna in 1873. His most famous work is the statue of "Széchenyi" (1880). The statues "Eve", "Innocence", "Reposing Amor" and "Young Girl with Amor" are in the collection of the Hungarian National Gallery. His style was influenced by academism.
