DERKOVITS, Gyula

Mother

1934
Oil and powder paint on canvas, 64,5 x 56 cm
Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest

A mother and her child, a favourite subject matter for Derkovits, often appeared in Derkovits' pictures. In "Mother", a subject very often painted, he re-interpreted it. In spite of mental tension, the picture reflects hope in the future, a sense of security and a search of beauty.

Derkovits liked close-ups in composition when a figure appeared in oversize proportions. The two figures form a circle to show that they belong together. Although both figures are portrayed in "Mother" and "Mother with Child" and the figures in "Bridge in Winter" are almost in the same posture, Derkovits produced an effective picture which can be compared only with "Dózsa", a series of wood cuts, in expressiveness.
