CANZI, Ágost Elek
(1808, Baden bei Wien - 1866, Pest)

He was a painter of Austrian descent, originally named Marin Kanz. He studied art in Stuttgart, Paris and Vienna. He settled down in Pest in 1846 where he painted mostly portraits. "Harvest in Vác", a rather immature biedermeier genre-picture on a Hungarian subject matter, made his name famous. The picture became so popular that it was available as a reproduction. His talent manifested itself best in small-size water colours. Major works: "Ignác Semmelweis", 1857, "Mrs. Ignác Semmelweis, Mária Weidenhofer", 1857.
