The art of Samu Börtsök is characterized by a complete identification with the basic principles of the founding members of Nagybánya school. In consequence, he has been many times judged because of his epigonism. Even his former tutor, Károly Ferenczy was very critical with him.
In spite of this, he was extremely productive and most of his works were sold at good prices, because they contained all the superficial marks of the style so typical for Nagybánya School. Haystacks were often chosen as theme at Nagybánya. Samu Börtsök was really fond of them too, therefore he was often referred to, as the "painter of the haystacks".
An other reason for his popularity must have been his lightness and optimism. He created a bright, always positive, easily understandable, perceivable visual world. This is why he has often been called the "painter of Sunday". Farmhouse is most certainly one of these very positive works of him. Its bright, sparkling colours are radiating with energy and vitality.
