Berény's works of around 1910, e.g. Leó Weiner's portrait (1911) or "Still-Life with Jug" (1900), which are dominated by structure and mass, are appreciated by propagators of modern trends. Berény's pictures of the 1930s can be linked to the post-Nagybánya school.
"Woman Reclining on Divan" was painted in a more artistic and traditional style. Although strong contours and the triangle of walls in the background with the landing on stairs reflect the early approach of a constructivist artist. It is due to light colours in the foreground, the red and the blue of the divan cover and white and black striped dress of the woman that the picture makes an elegant and airy impression.
