BERÉNY, Róbert
(1887, Budapest - 1953, Budapest)

Garden

1911
Oil on cardboard, 61 x 50 cm
Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest

The green grass in the foreground of the picture is irradiated by the light of the sun and greyish clouds make the sunny sky lively. Behind the trees there are houses in the middle of the picture, and the details of the houses are permeated by the sunshine. Berény attempted to depict closed forms, a definite composition and the interaction of space and planes even when he was painting landscapes. In Berény's picture, branches and leaves of trees leaning in on both sides in the foreground which are the most lively and eventual details of nature, are not loose masses and patches in light and vapour but forms of large units. He depicts the directness and lifelikeness of nature with new, i.e. modern artistic tools. The green colour of the mawn, the leaves of the trees and the blue of the sky symbolize the powers of nature, and the constructive arrangement of buildings in space resembling the simple shapes of geometrical objects increases the tension of content and form arising from the interaction of lifelikeness and picturesqueness.
