BERÉNY, Róbert
(1887, Budapest - 1953, Budapest)

Self-portrait with Straw Hat

1906
Oil on canvas, 59,5 x 44,5 cm
Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest

Berény who painted this picture in Paris, gave up the romantic - realistic style which marked the beginning of his career, and the inspiration by modern French artists, especially Matisse and Les Fauves. Dark colours or forms which were supposed to portray lifelikeness in an academic sense are not present even in traces. Instead, he painted his self-portrait with the artistic harmony of selfcontained colours, ochres, blues, greys and blacks. Forms are arranged by placing decorative patches next to each other and details are adjusted to the plane of the picture. He attempted to present his inner and outer characteristics by maintaining this new kind of imgaging. A power which is difficult to identify is radiating from his eyes which indicates that behind the sharp features there is a mentality to continuously analyze and evaluate himself and the world.
