BERÁN, Lajos
(1882, Budapest - 1943, Budapest)

Sculptor. In the first decades of the twentieth century another pioneer besides Fülöp Ö. Beck and Ede Telcs was Lajos Berán, who contributed greatly to the popularization of medal art. He made characteristic, forceful portraits on the reverse of which he designed many beautiful compositions. He also executed a great number of sport medals, and in this field was the most productive of all Hungarian artists. They constitute a large part of his oeuvre. From 1932 he was the art director of the State Mint, where he designed several coins.
