Miklós Ybl

1924
Cast bronze, 75 mm
Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest

Fülöp Ö. Beck's medal was struck in 1924 as a piece of a series portraying distinguished Hungarian architects. Miklós Ybl created numerous great buildings, among them the Budapest Opera, and many places.

The striking portrait on the obverse avoid details; thus, the tranquil, aloof surface, the settled forms evoke the art of Ybl. Symbolic figures representing Ybl's trade are depicted on the reverse of the medal: three female nudes holding above their heads a model of the Budapest Basilica, which was completed by Ybl. The movement and lines of the figures create an almost musical effect. The obverse and the reverse are in harmony; the shape and location of the letters further enhance the design's succinctness artistic value. The interpretation of the figures suggest the late influence of the constructive tendency of Art Nouveau as practiced in Munich. The rhythmic quality of the well-proportioned figures further enhance the musical effect.
