The turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries saw the revival of European medal art. It began with the French sculptor, F. H. Ponscarme. In the 1900s Fülöp Ö. Beck studied under Ponscarme in Paris.
After returning home, he was one of the sculptors who revived Hungarian medal art which was then at low ebb and raised it to an international standard. "String Quartet" shows all the merits of his mature art. The composition, consisting of four figures, fills the medal economically, the whole surface being divided into two by the music stands. The movement of the figures is full of harmony, and the gentle curves of the lines express the atmosphere of the music. The clear, constructive and artistic forms of the medal evoke the musical experience of a chamber concert.
