Garden of the Artists' Colony of Szentendre

1929
Oil on canvas, 45 x 60 cm
Ferenczy Museum, Szentendre

The Society of Szentendre Painters managed to get the holiday resort place of the Workers' Insurance Fund at Szentendre for the purpose of the artist's colony by the end of 1928. The Society organised its free school in this location as early as in 1929. Visitors to the colony included not only those who wanted to learn, but also guest artists. István Barta was probably one of the latter. The colony consisted of a few buildings in a large park. The original buildings were replaced with new ateliers at the turn of the 1970s. Nevertheless, the atmosphere of the old colony has been preserved in a number of pictures, including Barta's work. In the foreground of this picture one can see large paintings leaned against bushes and fences. In this picture built on the pronounced contrast of the red roof and the green vegetation the details highlighted by the sweltering high-noon sunrays and the shadowy details depicted in intensive reflection lights - despite the somewhat randomly arranged motifs - not only enhance the feeling of perspective, but also provide an excellent reflection of the summer atmosphere of this small town on the bank of the Danube.
