BALKAY, Pál
(1785, Tiszaörs - 1846, Eger)



Painter. Following his studies in Vienna, upon the invitation of Kazinczy, the reformist thinker who supported his activities all along, he returned to Hungary in 1808. He taught art in the town of Eger from 1817, and painted altar pictures and allegorical compositions on mythological themes (Leda and the Swan, 1810; The House of Peace, 1820). His well-known works include the portraits of Kazinczy and his wife as well as his Self-portrait. His best pieces are replicas.
