ANNA, Margit
(1913, Borota - 1991, Budapest)

Self-portrait

1937
Tempera, chalk on paper, 61 x 37,5 cm
Janus Pannonius Museum, Pécs

In this self-portrait of Margit Anna, a wreath of leaves decorates her head, and she holds a brush in her mouth, between her teeth. Painters often hold the brush this way while they are working; yet the wreath and the upward, slightly sideways movement of the head evoke the pose of those experiencing visions.
