János Aquila

The artist who came from Radkersburg, worked in Velemér in 1378, in Bántornya in 1383 and in Mártonhely in 1392. The style of his pictures unites Northern Italian and Czech elements: plastic figures, perspective architecture, dynamic drapes, realism of portraits and still-lives. Commissioned by members of the lower gentry in Velemér and Mártonhely, he painted even a self-portrait in his great self-confidence. While working in the church of Bántornya, he deferred to the orders of the aristocratic Bánfi family: he produced a series of impressive pictures.
