Child Hercules on the Hydra of Lerna

c. 1484
Red marble, 46 x 70 cm
King Matthias Museum, Visegrád

Three sides of the octagonal fountain were discovered in 1940-43 during the excavations on the site of the summer palace of King Matthias at Visegrád. The Renaissance fountain was the most beautiful piece of the Late Gothic courtyard of the palace. The sides of the lower basin were decorated by coat-of-arms and fruit garlands, at the top the figure of the child Hercules on the Hydra of Lerna was placed. It is assumed that the fountain is partly or completely the work of Giovanni Dalmata.
