UNKNOWN GOTHIC MASTER, sculptor
(14th century)

Madonna (First Madonna from Toporc)

1340-60
Painted wood, height: 111,5 cm
Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest

In the French sculpture around 1300 there were several examples of the standing Madonna. Probably a stone Madonna frorm the Fontenay Abbey influenced the master of the first madonna from Topors, although indirectly through Austrian examples. However, this Madonna is a rather individual variant which influenced sculptors in Upper Hungary and Poland.
