UNKNOWN ROMANESQUE MASTER, sculptor
(12th century)

Crowned Aged Man (side view)

1170-80
Sandstone, height: 73 cm
Cathedral Museum, Pécs

The fragment probably belonged to a group of 24 aged men of an Apocalypse group. According to the Apocalypse of St John this group surrounds the throne of God appering in Glory at the end of times. This motif was a favourite subject of the sculpture in southern France in the 12th century, the representation in Pécs is unique outside France.
