Cathedral Museum, Pécs

Before it was radically rebuilt at the end of the 19th century, the Romanesque Cathedral in Pécs had been a basilica with three aisles, three apses and two pairs of towers. The best part of the several hundreds of stoneworks uncovered on the site so far is kept in the Cathedral's store-room. The stone carvings suggest great artistic skills on the part of the group of sculptors who were the first to bring the style of Burgundy to Hungary. The stone carving originating from the third quarter of the 12th century and representing one of the twenty-four "Elders" described in the Book of Revelations most probably belonged to the rood-screen of the Cathedral, together with a few other similar fragments. This stonework is especially interesting for its rendering as a sculpture in its own right, as well as for its lavish and decorative carving technique.

This motif was a favourite subject of the sculpture in southern France in the 12th century, the representation in Pécs is unique outside France.
