Portal (Porta speciosa)

c. 1190
Marble
Balassa Bálint Museum, Esztergom

Only a few fragments survived from the western portal (Porta speciosa) of the destroyed Cathedral of St Adalbert in Esztergom. However, we know the entire portal in details from a painting commisioned by Canon György Klimo (1741-51) for the purpose of documentation. The figures on both sides of the portal are saints and prophets, the picture above the door represents the enthroned Mary with Sts Adalbert and Stephen.
