ZIFFER, Sándor
(1880, Eger - 1962, Nagybánya)



Painter. After his studies at the School of Design, he was a pupil of Raupp at the Munich Academy and at Simon Hollósy's school in 1904. From 1906 onwards, he worked in Nagybánya. He met expressionism in Paris and Berlin. He settled down in Nagybánya in 1918 where he worked as a teacher in 1935-45. He played an important role in establishing modern Romanian painting. His first pictures reflected the infleunce of Simon Hollósy, later he became a follower of post-impressionism. His style is characterized by decorative painting, definite contours and strong colours.
