VILT, Tibor
(1905, Budapest - 1983, Budapest)

Painter László Mednyánszky

1942
Lead, height: 37 cm
Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest

Tibor Vilt was an eminent master of modern Hungarian sculpture - an untiring experimenter. He began his studies at the Academy of Applied Arts in Budapest, then he studied for two years under Kisfaludi Strobl at the Academy of Fine Arts. Since 1926 he has been exhibiting regularly.

His portrait of László Mednyánszky is an intimate study of the great Hungarian painter. Tibor Vilt's works are rich in ideas and their intensity is striking. The Mednyánszky bust evokes the spirit of the sensitive humanist painter. His ability for direct, expressive modelling creates a lively contact between the onlooker and the artist. The restless surface of the bronze in his earlier expressive works plays an important part in interpreting the emotional content. This bust was a gift from the Ministry of Religion and Education in 1942.
