VESZELSZKY, Béla
(1905, Budapest - 1977, Budapest)

Portrait of a Man (Lajos Szabó)

c. 1940
Oil on canvas, 36 x 48 cm
Private collection

Veszelszky suspended his activity in the early 1940s. Most of his work up to then was destroyed by a bomb attack in 1944 during the siege of Budapest. From the period before 1932, including works made in college and drawings, about 25 remained, and from the twenty years between 1933 and 1953 only two are known. One of them is the Portrait of a Man (Lajos Szabó). Its texture consists of tiny brushstrokes, broken coloured gestures creating a basically expressive effect where the almost unrecognizable human figure is concealed in the tangle of "pointlike" forms.
