SZAMOVOLSZKY, Ödön
(1878, Nagyberezna - 1914, Budapest)

Sculptor. After graduating from the School of Applied Arts, he worked in the workshops of György Zala and József Róna, then went to Italy, Munich and Paris to learn. His works were first exhibited in the Art Gallery in 1902. He created memorial and ornamental statues (e.g. reliefs of the 12 apostles at the portal of the St. Stephen Cathedral in Budapest) in a strong realistic style. He designed the "Liberty Memorial" together with István Gách in 1907, but they completed only a part which brought them the State Gold Medal in 1913. The Memorial was, however, never finished.
