SCHOEFFT, August
(1809, Pest - 1888, London)

Schoefft must have learnt to paint from his father, also a painter. "Pannonia Urged to Work by her Guardian Spirit" attracted much attention. After he had painted Széchenyi's portrait in 1835, he travelled to India via Turkey. He met Sándor Kőrösi Csoma in India. He soon found sponsors. He painted the portrai of the prince in Anerith in 1842. While travelling around India, he collected treasures of art of the Orient. He travelled to Venice via Egypt. He visited most European countries. He spent a longer time in London, where he exhibited his works together with his collection, for which he sacrificed a part of his wealth, and which he was finally obliged to sell in 1863. The majority of his pictures are in the possession of collections abroad. His self-protrait is in the Historical Portrait Gallery. He died mad and in great poverty.
