RÉTI, István

Painter. One of the founders and theoreticians of the Nagybánya art school. He left the School of Decorative Arts after one month. He went to Munich in 1891 where he attended Hollósy's school. He was a student of the Julian Academy, Paris. After returning home from Paris, he painted "Christmas of the Bohemians Abroad", his first major work in Nagybánya.

In 1896, he founded the Nagybánya school with János Thorma and Simon Hollósy, and became a teacher of it. He illustrated poems of József Kiss in 1896-87, Sándor Bródy's "Silver Goat", painted Bródy's, Ferenc Herceg's and Mór Jókai's portraits. "Burial of a Private Soldier", his major work comes from his Nagybánya period, 1899. He painted his mother's portrait in 1900-1902, and "Christ among his Disciple", his most significant church composition. He worked in Rome in 1905-1907. He lived in Nagybánya until 1913, when he became a teacher at the Art School. During the summers until 1927 he went to Nagybánya to teach there. He reformed the Art School with Károly Lyka according to the Nagybánya principles in 1920. He was a teacher of art at the Art School from 1923, then Rector from 1927, and retired in 1938.

He painted Kossuth's portrait for Budapest in 1931. His art never really reached the standard of his works at young age. His activities in the area of art pedagogy were significant, too. He was more and more engaged in literature on art from 1920. He summed up the history of the Nagybánya school and his views on art based on Bergson's and Croce's esthetics.
