RÉTH, Alfréd
(1884, Budapest - 1966, Paris)



Painter. He pursued his art studies in Nagybánya (Baia Mare, Romania) and Paris, where he eventually settled. He put his art pieces on show in a number of cities abroad (Paris, Vienna etc.); he had comprehensive exhibitions on his art's works in the House of Arts, Budapest in 1912, and in Paris in 1955. He exhibited his paintings in Yugoslavia in 1958, and in Poland in 1959. He played a major role in the art movement of the century. He started off as a postimpressionist painter, then was influenced by oriental art and cubism. Later, he became an adherent of geometric abstraction.
