REMÉNYI, József
(1887, Kassa - 1977, Budapest)

Ferenc Liszt International Piano Competition

1933
Struck bronze, 70 mm
Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest

The memorial medal for the 1933 Ferenc Liszt International Piano Competition is a beautiful example of Reményi's mature style. The Ferenc Liszt portrait on the obverse of the coin has emphasized plasticity and Reményi has managed to give it remarkably original content, despite the fact that characteristic profile has been represented so many times. Like most modellists, Reményi liked to work in series. His doctor series is especially noteworthy, each bearing a profile on the obverse, while the reverse offered him plenty of scope for design. His musician series, because of its international character, has brought him many foreign admirers. The reverse of the Liszt medal shows a naked female figure bearing a lyre. The female nude is a recurring the in Reményi's oeuvre, making use of the static, idealizing expression of the mature Renaissance.
