OHMANN, Béla
(1890, Budapest - 1968, Budapest)



Sculptor. Ohmann, a pupil of Imre Simay and Lajos Mátrai at the School of Industrial Design between 1911-16, visited Italy, Germany and France. First a teacher at the School of Industrial Design from 1921, he became the leader of the Department of Decorative Sculpture at the Technical University, Budapest. He was a follower of neo-classicism.

Together with Lajos Mátrai he created the relief of the Hangyaház in Budapest. The Statues of "Ozarai Pipó", "Pelbárt Temesvári", "King Matthias" and "Sándor Körösi Csoma" (all in the Pantheon in Szeged) met with praise. "Maria", a statue, brought him a lot of success at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1937. It was Ohmann who created the bronze trptych of the St. Ladislaus Altar for the church in Városmajor, Budapest. "The Recapture of Buda Castle", a memorial, was erected in Bécsi kapu tér in Budapest in 1936. The statues "Miklós Zrinyi", "Ottokár Prohászka" and "Domokos Kálmáncsehi" were erected in Székesfehérvár in 1938-40, "Huszár Gál" in Debrecen in 1939. The portrait of "Géza Gárdonyi" can be seen in Eger and the relief of "Pongrác Kacsóh" in Keszthely, "Standing Female Nude" in the park of the Sanatorium in Sopron (1964). The statue "Neptun" in in Baja and "Traffic", a relief, is in Vác. Several of his statues are in the possession of the Hungarian National Gallery.
