NEMES LAMPÉRTH, József
(1891, Budapest - 1924, Sátoraljaújhely)

Nude, back view

1916
Oil on canvas, 130 x 78 cm
Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest

"Nude" and "Nude with her back" are counterparts of each other in form and approach. The figure which is as plastic as a statue is sharply separated from the green and black background. The figure is formed roughly and delicately at the same time. The range of colours from brown to ochre follow the shape of the body, and the curves of tense tendons and muscles. Light appears on the shoulders and the arms. There is a special tension or hidden power in the robust female figure. The artist's emotional involvement is projected in an expressive way on the figure. The power of the expression is even increased by Cézanne's approach inherent in the structure: the portrayal of forms of analytic preciseness. Nemes Lampérth had been working on female nudes in counterpoise (e.g. drawings from Paris in 1913-14, and 1916). The hand of the figure turning the back to the spectator indicates weight and the arm lifted to the head emphasizes slenderness and beauty.
