Tipping Haycart

1867
Lead, India ink and pen on paper, 236 x 334 mm
Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest

This drawing was probably done when Munkácsy first came home from Munich. The Hungarian National Gallery has many of his sketch-books and drawings, though in fact drawings were an insignificant part of his oeuvre, with the exception of a few studies and water colours. These are usually of scenes, and are executed in a free manner with an atmosphere reminiscent of the later pictures he painted around 1880. The sketch of the "Tipping Haycart", bought in 1902 from Dezső Malonyai, is typical of the folk genre scenes popular at the time. The small picture shows his skill in drawing and design. He has beautifully expressed the excited movement with light pen lines, indicating the outlines only, and the bushes and loose bundles of hay in the background with fine hatching.
