Glorification of Emperor Charles VI

1755
Oil on copper, 57 x 86 cm
Historical Picture Gallery, Hungarian National Museum, Budapest

Sitting in his ceremonial tent to the right in the picture, the ruler is receiving a report. Surrounded by allegoric figures and wearing a crown, Mary is in the cloud over the tent, reaching toward the Emperor with an oil branch. Right of the tent there is a column bearing the figures of Habsburg rulers: Ferdinand III, Leopold I, Joseph I and Charles VI. The dates 1740-1745 inscribed on the column may refer to the Emperorship of Charles Albert Elector of Bavaria and the Dresden Peace, as a result of which Maria Theresa's husband Francis of Lorraine won the opportunity to become Emperor. This is why he is likely to have commissioned the picture, intending to have a monument made of his father-in-law's Ottoman campaigns. To the left in the foreground there is a battle scene, probably the siege of Belgrade, displaying the recognisable figure of Prince Eugene of Savoy.
