Woman with Lace Kerchief

beginning of the 1930s
Oil on canvas, 81 x 65 cm
Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest

The sitter is pianist Zdenka Ticharick.

The picture "Woman with Lace Kerchief" is perhaps one of the most beautiful portraits which were painted in the style of École de Paris. Its informal pictorial qualities and its deliberate world of colours full of light make the figure light and airy, only the line of the chair-back and the symbolic form of the door keep her in the world of reality. Márffy's full-bodied colours appear in this picture, which are suggestive of a world rich in emotions. Movement and inactivity, silent devotion and power of colours are composed into a lyric confession.
