LEHEL, Mária
(1889, Budapest - 1972, Budapest)

Painter. She was educated first in Nagybánya (Baia-Mare, Romania) and later in Paris. Her artistic career commenced in the group of Eight in Budapest. Her first picture was complemented by Károly Ferenczy and Béla Iványi-Grünwald in the capital city. From 1924 she lived abroad but would visit her native country from time to time. She had exhibitions virtually in every major city of the world from London through Rome to Sao Paulo. In Paris she studied the modern painting of the early twentieth century and was an adherent of Matisse. Her pictures can be characterised by an extraordinary opulence of colours and the subtle splice of shades. The Italian state purchased several of her paintings for the Museum of Milan and of Genoa. Several of her pictures are also possessed by the Hungarian National Gallery. She was present as guest at the most distinguished exhibitions in Budapest; approximately two scores of her canvasses perished in a bombarded Buda flat. In 1969 on her 80th birthday the Institute of Cultural Relations and the World Federation of Hungarians organised a comprehensive exhibition of her works in Budapest.
