KOZMA, Lajos
(1884, Kiskorpád - 1948, Budapest)

Architect, designer and graphic artist, professor of the technical university, holder of the Kossuth-Prize (1948). He graduated from the Technical University in Budapest. He travelled across France in 1909-10 on a study-trip, and after his return he worked in the designing office of Béla Lajta from 1910 to 1913 and also taught in the School of Industrial Drawing. He researched folk art extensively and his architectural and graphic pieces of this period demonstrate the influence of Transylvanian folk art. He made most of his graphic artworks and illustrations associated with folk baroque and folk art for the Kner Printing House at Gyoma. He was one of the most authentic representatives of Hungarian Art Nouveau.

From the 30s his architectural and interior design activities came to the foreground. His furniture designs were highly successful both abroad and in Hungary. His peculiar style was called 'Kozma-baroque', because it was characterised by neobaroque elements. He designed stage scenery as well. He was attracted to functionalism from the thirties and he built several villas in modern style. From 1946 he worked as a teacher and principal of the School of Applied Arts.
