Shepherdess

1940
Bronze, height: 60 cm
Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest

This statue, "Shepherdess", by András Kocsis is the smaller version of the one erected in the open air in Nyíregyháza in 1941. The statue shows a strong, slim, barefooted young woman in a simple knee-length dress. Her beautiful young face is framed by her scarf. She is stepping forward with her left foot in self-assurance, giving the figure a feeling of movement, while the static quality of the statue radiates serenity. The play of light and shade on the bronze surfaces reveals the richness of the details. András Kocsis began his career between the two world wars, in great hardship, but he persisted in his work with determination. He had continued to develop his technical resources and had an excellent ability for making the fullest use of sculptural means. He had a good feeling for selecting his themes and then rendering them in the most suitable way. "Shepherdess" combines his academic knowledge with the liveliness of his direct personal experience.
