KISS, Bálint
(1802, Szentes - 1868, Pest)

Painter. He studied to become a teacher. He went on with his studies in the Vienna Academy from 1827, where he became a friend of Miklós Barabás. He settled down in Szentes in 1830. He painted portraits in Debrecen from 1834. He lived in Pest from 1837 and became a guard of the Gallery of the Hungarian National Museum in 1847, but in 1850, however, he lost his job because of the active part which he had played in the war of independence in 1848-49. He was given the post once again in 1861 but he failed to paint anything significant any more.

He painted mostly historic pictures. The picture "Farewell of János Pethes from his Daughter in the Prison of Leopoldvár" survived in several versions and copies. With the choice of subject matters, he expressed the opposition of a nation which was about to restore its self-esteem.
