GYÁRFÁS, Jenő
(1857, Sepsiszentgyörgy - 1925, Sepsiszentgyörgy)

Painter. His masters included Bertalan Székely in Budapest from 1873 to 1877, Wagner, W. Diez and G. Max in Munich from 1877 to 1880. He settled down in Sepsiszentgyörgy in 1880. With the portrait of Bertalan Karlovszky (1880), he demonstrated his ability to observe. He painted "Bier Right", a major work inspired by Arany's ballad. He visited Italy in 1882.

Losing his spirit because of neglect, he accepted a post as an art teacher in 1882. After this, he painted mostly portraits, some of which are outstanding pictures of psychological observations. He designed honorary diplomas and drew illustrations, e.g. for "The Austro-Hungarian Monarchy in Words and Pictures". In the late 1880s, he turned to painting historical compositions, of which the best-known one is "The Oath of King László V" painted for the Millenary Exhibition in Budapest. He applied modern tools of painting in "The Death of Áron Gábor". His unpublished literary works were supplied with his own illustrations. After 1894, he did not paint any more because of serious problems in his family.
