Woman with Candle

1910s
Pastel on paper, 71,5 x 25,5 cm
Deák collection, Municipal Gallery, Székesfehérvár

Gulácsy, whose art cannot be classified in any of the trends, is normally referred to as a preraffaelite, symbolist and as an art nouveau artist.

He painted a lot of female portraits, including erotic and ethereal ones. The proportions of "Woman with Candle" follow the shape of the female body, as does the picture "Young Woman with Rose". The woman smiling coquettishly behind the roses produces an entirely different impression. The tense body of the woman holding a candle and her ecstatic face do not reflect sensual pleasure but tragedy or tension. She is standing in her very light and loose dress as if she were waiting for a hero of Shakespeare's at night. The picture has a transcendental purplish and timeless atmosphere. Past and present seem to be present in it.
