GOEZ, József Ferenc
(1745, Nagyszeben - 1815, Regensburg)

The Transylvanian Baron Goez was attracted to fine arts from his early youth. In 1772 he was a pupil of the engraving class at the Viennese Academy, and in the course of his adventurous life he was concerned with theatrical decoration, portrait painting and illustration of literary works. From 1779 he lived in Munich, and later in Augsburg and Regensburg. He was also active as a writer, and in 1791 he was legally accused of being a freemason.

He was a typical figure of the Enlightenment, a versatile participant and chronicler of the ambiguous artistic tendencies developing at the end of the l8th century. Only a few examples of his artistic activity have survive some drawing series illustrating theatrical expressions (Versuch einer zahlreichen Folge leidenschaftlicher Entwürfe für empfindsame Kunst- und Schauspielfreunde, 1784), miniature portraits of actors, and oil painting illustrations of Shakespeare's dramas. His self portrait, conserved in the Nemzeti Múzeum, Budapest, emerges amongst them with its simple beauty and sincerity.
