GÁDOR, István
(1891, Kóka - 1984, Budapest)



Ceramist. He left the Art School in 1911 where he learnt sculpting. His masters included Antal Loránfi, Imre Simay and Géza Maróti. After visiting an exhibition in Vienna, his attraction was drawn to ceramics. He learnt its technology in a brick factory and from a stove-maker, and he experimented with the artistic possibilities. Josef Hoffmann admitted him to the Vienna Werkstätte in 1919. The following years saw him work in Vienna. He had an exhibition in Belvedere in 1921 and in the Ernst Museum together withVilmos Aba Novák in 1922. He taught art at the Atelier, a design and workshop school.

He was awarded the Silver Medal in Milan in 1933 and the Gold Medal at the World Exhibition in Brussels in 1935 and in Milan in 1936. He met with similar success in New York, Paris and Milan. He was awarded the Silver Medal of the National Association of Hungarian Industrial Artists in 1931. He was a teacher of the School of Industrial Design between 1945-57. At the beginning of his career he designed bowls and vasas, later ornamental ceramics and garden statuettes.
