Landscape with Cows

1932
Oil on canvas, 56 x 73 cm
Deák Collection, Municipal Gallery, Székesfehérvár

Gadányi was awarded for his works with the prize of the Szinyei Society on the advice of Rippl-Rónai in 1925. "Resting Cows" was one of the pictures exhibited together with other artists's works who were also awarded. The subjet matter of "Landscape with Cows" (1923) was a similar one. Colourful effects of brown, white and grey were similar, forms almost abstract and a composition in plane characterized a picture of his with horses. Gadányi liked his compositions with animals that he had a tapestry made on the theme ("Landscape with Horses", 1958-59). Gadányi's art between the two wars can be characterized by a hesitation between naturalism and pure art, similarly to the progressives. He was attracted to figurality and postimpressionism by the spirit of the age and antiques. Intimate, classifying panteism, an ideal in art accepted by many artists was not favoured by reformers with an inclination to experiment.
