Züzü with Cock

1912
Oil on canvas, 71 x 78 cm
Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest

The Züzü-series constitutes the most colourful and intimate part in Csók's works. Born in Paris, Züzü (Julia or Juliette Csók) was the only child of the painter. Csók painted pictures of all her childhood ("Züzü in the Cradle", 1910, "Züzü's First Walk", 1911, "Züzü's Christmas", 1921, "The Sick Züzü", 1914, "Züzü is Dancing", 1915, "Züzü in the Arbour", 1916). "Züzü with Cock" is the most beautiful picture of the series where he already sums up of post-impressionism. Züzü, sitting in front of a toy-piano, is turning towards Coco, a big Cochin-china cock on the table covered with a colourful oriental rug - this is the subject matter of the fabulous picture rich in colours. The arrangement and plainnes results in a decorative effect which is even enhanced by the arabesque-like rug with large floral pattern. It can hardly produce the experience of three dimensions, it is rather like a view woven in colours, like Vuillard's similar works. Colours of the picture reflect those of Csók, inspired by decorative colours of Hungarian folk-art.
